Thanks to its urban configuration and rich history, Genoa is becoming more and more popular as an ideal location for films, shorts and video shootings thus showing its interest in cinema and its spread.
Many, indeed, are the cinema and tv productions that have chosen our city as location to shoot their works, to such an extent that first, the Genova Film Commission, an ad-hoc office to liaise with film studios has been created, then it has been transformed in the Genova Liguria Film Commission, a regional indipendent foundation which supports film studios and video makers.

Moreover, many famous filmmakers, such as Pietro Germi and Giuliano Montaldo to mention a few, as well as renowned actors are from Genoa and, over the years, national and international events and festivals have been held here, thus starting and promoting a culture of cinema that has become rooted and grown from the ferment of the city.
Did you know that?
Genoa was the only city in Italy that, in 1986, could celebrate the centenary of its first contact with cinema, in the exact same venue where the first film screening took place in 1886: the Sala Sivori, next to the exquisite Palazzo Doria Spinola (16th century), now home to the Province and Prefecture.
For those with a passion for the “seventh art”, the city currently offers: 1 Cineplex at the Old Port area, 9 multiscreen cinemas, 14 cinemas, and a number of film clubs with an established cultural tradition. Cinemas are scattered almost everywhere throughout the town.
Both public and private bodies are very proactive in their cultural promotion of the city, offering festivals, theme shows, art films, and meetings with cinema personalities.
One of the most important Ligurian cultural events dedicated to the cinema and to the audiovisual is the Genova Film Festival, reference point for fans and lovers, which every year offers a programme rich in events, previews and meetings with the authors.
Palazzo Ducale houses "La stanza del cinema" (the cinema room) a permanent meeting and discussion place for all cinema lovers.
