Genoa is a welcoming town full of flowers all the year round. A mild climate, sunshine, sea breezes and environmental qualities favour the rich flora (Mediterranean, exotic and mountain flora).
On the balconies and in the parks, olive trees and vines grow splendidly along with flowers and herbs, among these the scented basil which characterises delicious local gourmet specialities of international fame (such as "pesto").
In the town centre the public parks, spectacularly structured, occupy 82.000 sq m.
On the sea coast, as well as in the hills and in the inner valleys, there are other parks - once belonging to the ancient "villas" - which invite the visitor to savour the enchanting charm of a romantic flower-scented town. The luxuriant Parchi di Nervi (96.130 sq m ) spread along hills, among olive trees and sea cliffs.
In the western part the parks of ancient villas occupy, in total , 265.000 sq m (Villa Durazzo Pallavicini) is particularly spectacular
In the hills (the area consists of 35% of parks) near the town areas is the remarkable Parco delle Mura (87.600 sq m) as well as the Parchi Urbani dei Forti, Monte Fasce and Monte Moro, Gazzo, Punta Martin and Monte Pennello, and the Parco Regionale Monte Beigua - Zona Sambuco - Monte Dente, which give several varied opportunities for nice, picturesque excursions.
